Polynucleotides

The natural ageing process affects us all and contributing factors such as UV rays and lifestyle choices can exacerbate this process, leaving our skin looking tired, wrinkled, pigmented and lacklustre.

Aesthetic medicine offers us non-surgical solutions for skin which is experiencing the effects of the ageing process and in recent years, more and more innovative treatments, using revolutionary substances to help the skin heal and revitalise itself on a cellular level have been on the increase.

One such treatment, which Libbie Wallace is excited to introduce to her treatment portfolio, is injectable polynucleotides.

What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are extracted DNA fractions, which attract water molecules, working within the skin tissues to repair the skin and boost skin quality and hydration. They also act to utilise an anti-free radical action, scavenging and absorbing damaging OH hydroxyl radicals, which can accumulate because of cell damage from UV rays, environmental pollution and stress.

Polynucleotides work by stimulating fibroblasts, encouraging cell turnover, improving elasticity, boosting collagen production as well as hydrating the skin. They also calm inflammation and rebalance melanocyte activity to create an even and refreshed skin tone. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, polynucleotides will not augment facial features, but will offer skin rejuvenation and healing from within. The result is fresher looking, smoother and plumper skin, less lines and wrinkles and a healthy ‘bounce’ to the skin tone.

What is the treatment regime for polynucleotide therapy?

Polynucleotide therapy provides physiological improvement and bio revitalisation of the skin over time, managing the ageing process.

  • For prevention and the maintenance of youthful skin, we recommend 1 treatment every 3 weeks in 3 sessions, repeated twice a year.
  • For skin rejuvenation and correction of aged skin, sun damage, wrinkles and skin laxity, we recommend 1 treatment every 3 weeks in 4 sessions, repeated twice a year.
  • For the treatment of scars (acne and surgical scars as well as stretch marks), we recommend 1 treatment every 3 weeks in 4 sessions.
  • For hair thinning, we recommend 1 treatment every week for 4 weeks, then 1 treatment every 3 weeks in 4 sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

After the application of a topical numbing cream, the polynucleotides are injected into the skin via specific techniques using either a needle or a cannula, depending on the area to be treated. Once the treatment is complete, you may return to your daily activities, but adhering to any aftercare advice that Libbie offers you.

As polynucleotides are very bio-compatible, the side effects are minimal. However, this does depend on the injection technique used. Most common side effects are slight redness, mild discomfort, with a chance of bruising. These side effects are self-limiting and will last 3 to 7 days post treatment.

  • Pregnancy
  • Breast feeding
  • The use of antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs

Libbie will always advise that you attend an initial face-to-face consultation and skin analysis at her Harley Street aesthetic clinic, before any treatment can be agreed upon. She will examine your skin and discuss the options available to you. She will also check your medical history to ensure that the treatment will be safe and effective for you. Once this initial consultation is complete and you are happy to proceed, you can book in for your first treatment session.

You should start to see the first signs of an improvement in the first 7 to 10 days, following your initial treatment with polynucleotides. After which, the full effects should be visible at around 3 to 4 weeks.
