What is Biofiller?

Biofiller is a plasma gel made from a small sample of your own blood. The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma, which is then gently heated so it thickens into a soft gel. Once cooled, it's injected to add subtle volume where the face, neck or hands have become hollow or thin.

Because it's made entirely from your own blood, nothing synthetic is added, and the risk of an allergic reaction is very low. Libbie uses the WorldPRP system to prepare it.

How it works

Biofiller adds soft volume straight away, and the gel is gradually absorbed by the body over the following months. It's often combined with PRP in the same treatment, to support skin quality as well as volume.

Results usually last around 6 months, and a retreatment every 6 months is recommended to maintain them.

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Biofiller can't be dissolved. For this reason, Libbie takes a careful, gradual approach, and may suggest building volume over more than one session.

What happens at your consultation

  1. 1

    Your medical history

Libbie goes through your health, medications and any previous treatments, to make sure any option you consider is safe for you.

  2. 2

    Your goals

You talk through what you'd like to change and how you want to look and feel.

  3. 3

    Your options

Libbie explains what's suitable for you, including expected results, risks, side effects and costs, and agrees a plan with you. Where treatment isn't the right choice, she'll tell you honestly, and suggest alternatives or refer you on where appropriate.

  4. 4

    Time to decide

A cooling-off period before any treatment gives you time to think, with no pressure to go ahead.

If you do go ahead, Libbie will give you written information about preparing for your appointment and caring for your skin afterwards, and you'll have a follow-up appointment to review your results.

Before your treatment

  • Drink plenty of water the day before and on the day, and eat a normal meal beforehand. This makes the blood sample easier to take.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen, for 7 days before treatment, unless a doctor has prescribed them.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
  • Arrive without makeup.
  • Avoid booking treatment within 2 weeks of an important event, to allow any swelling or bruising to settle.

Treatment

On the day of treatment:

  1. 1Review medical history and goals
  2. 2Answer any further questions
  3. 3Obtain written consent for the treatment
  4. 4Take a small blood sample from your arm
  5. 5Prepare the plasma gel, which is heated and then cooled
  6. 6Cleanse the skin and apply numbing cream if needed
  7. 7Biofiller injections, using a fine needle or blunt cannula

Aftercare

  • Swelling is common, especially under the eyes, and can make the area look fuller for the first few days.
  • Avoid touching or massaging the treated area for 24 hours, unless Libbie has asked you to.
  • Avoid makeup for 12 hours.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers for 7 days. Paracetamol is usually fine, unless you've been told not to take it.
  • Avoid alcohol, vigorous exercise, saunas and steam rooms for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Sleep on your back, with your head slightly raised, on the first night.

Side effects

Side effects are usually mild and settle within 1 to 2 weeks:

  • Redness and swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising, at the injection points or where blood was taken
  • Small lumps or firmness while the gel settles

Rare but important to know about:

  • Infection
  • Uneven results
  • Feeling faint during or after the blood sample
  • The gel blocking a blood vessel, which can damage the skin or, very rarely, affect vision

If the skin turns pale or white (blanching), or you have severe or worsening pain, contact Libbie immediately on 07974 345 457.

If you notice any change in your vision, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E straight away, then let Libbie know.

Medical suitability

Treatment isn't suitable if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a blood or platelet disorder, or a low platelet count
  • Take anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medicines
  • Have active cancer, or are having cancer treatment
  • Have an active infection, or a skin infection in the treatment area

Please let Libbie know if you:

  • Have anaemia, or feel faint having blood taken
  • Have an autoimmune condition
  • Have recently taken steroid medicines
  • Have a history of cold sores
  • Have had fillers, threads or permanent fillers in the same area

Is this right for me?

  • You'd like to soften hollows or restore gentle volume, for example under the eyes, in the face or on the backs of the hands.
  • You'd prefer a filler made from your own body, rather than a synthetic product.
  • You're looking for a subtle, natural-looking result.

Frequently asked questions

How is Biofiller different from hyaluronic acid filler?+

Biofiller is made from your own blood, with nothing synthetic added. It gives softer, more subtle volume and lasts around 6 months. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, it can't be dissolved, so Libbie builds results gradually.

Does it hurt?+

Most people find it very manageable. Having blood taken feels like a routine blood test, and numbing cream can be used for the injections.

Is there any downtime?+

Most people return to their usual activities straight away, but swelling and bruising are common, especially under the eyes. It's best to avoid booking treatment just before an important event.

When will I see results?+

You'll see a difference straight away, though swelling can make the area look fuller at first. Your result usually settles over 2 to 4 weeks.

How long does it last?+

Results usually last around 6 months, and a retreatment every 6 months is recommended to maintain them.

Can it be combined with other treatments?+

Yes. Biofiller is often combined with PRP in the same treatment, and can be used alongside skin boosters or micro-needling. Libbie will advise on the best order and timing.
