What is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It's made from a small sample of your own blood, which is spun in a machine called a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. Platelets contain growth factors, natural proteins your body uses to repair and renew tissue.

The concentrated plasma is then injected into the skin, or applied during micro-needling, to encourage collagen production and improve skin quality. Because it's made from your own blood, the risk of an allergic reaction is very low. Libbie uses the WorldPRP system, a medical-grade kit designed specifically for preparing PRP.

How it works

PRP can gradually improve skin texture, tone and fine lines on the face and neck, and is often used for the delicate under-eye area.

A course of 3 treatments, 4 to 6 weeks apart, is usually recommended, followed by maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months.

What happens at your consultation

  1. 1

    Your medical history

Libbie goes through your health, medications and any previous treatments, to make sure any option you consider is safe for you.

  2. 2

    Your goals

You talk through what you'd like to change and how you want to look and feel.

  3. 3

    Your options

Libbie explains what's suitable for you, including expected results, risks, side effects and costs, and agrees a plan with you. Where treatment isn't the right choice, she'll tell you honestly, and suggest alternatives or refer you on where appropriate.

  4. 4

    Time to decide

A cooling-off period before any treatment gives you time to think, with no pressure to go ahead.

If you do go ahead, Libbie will give you written information about preparing for your appointment and caring for your skin afterwards, and you'll have a follow-up appointment to review your results.

Before your treatment

  • Drink plenty of water the day before and on the day, and eat a normal meal beforehand. This makes the blood sample easier to take.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen, for 7 days before treatment, unless a doctor has prescribed them, as they can affect how your platelets work.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
  • Arrive without makeup.

Treatment

On the day of treatment:

  1. 1Review medical history and goals
  2. 2Answer any further questions
  3. 3Obtain written consent for the treatment
  4. 4Take a small blood sample from your arm
  5. 5Prepare the PRP in the centrifuge
  6. 6Cleanse the skin and apply numbing cream if needed
  7. 7PRP injections, or micro-needling with PRP

Aftercare

  • Your skin may look red or slightly swollen for 24 to 48 hours, with small bumps at the injection points.
  • Avoid washing the treated area for 6 hours, and makeup for 12 hours.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers for 7 days, as they can reduce the effect of treatment. Paracetamol is usually fine, unless you've been told not to take it.
  • Avoid alcohol, vigorous exercise, saunas and steam rooms for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF every day.

Side effects

Side effects are usually mild and settle within a few days:

  • Redness and mild swelling
  • Small bumps at the injection points
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising, at the injection points or where blood was taken

Rare but important to know about:

  • Infection
  • Feeling faint during or after the blood sample
  • Temporary darkening of the skin

If you notice increasing redness, pain, swelling, pus or feel feverish, contact Libbie on 07974 345 457.

Medical suitability

Treatment isn't suitable if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a blood or platelet disorder, or a low platelet count
  • Take anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medicines
  • Have active cancer, or are having cancer treatment
  • Have an active infection, or a skin infection in the treatment area

Please let Libbie know if you:

  • Have anaemia or feel faint having blood taken
  • Have an autoimmune condition
  • Have recently taken steroid medicines
  • Have a history of cold sores

Frequently asked questions

Does it hurt?+

Most people find it very manageable. Having blood taken feels like a routine blood test, and numbing cream can be used for the treatment itself.

Is there any downtime?+

Most people return to their usual activities straight away, though your skin may look red or slightly swollen for a day or two.

When will I see results?+

Results build gradually as your skin renews, usually over 2 to 3 months. Many people notice their skin looks fresher after the first few weeks.

How many treatments will I need?+

A course of 3 treatments is usually recommended, with maintenance every 6 to 12 months. Libbie will advise on the right plan for you.

Is it safe to use my own blood?+

Using your own blood means the risk of an allergic reaction is very low. As with any treatment, there are some risks, which Libbie will explain at your consultation.

Can it be combined with other treatments?+

Yes. PRP is often combined with micro-needling, and can be used alongside skin boosters. Libbie will advise on the best order and timing.
