Collagen stimulators

What are collagen stimulators?

As we age, our skin makes less collagen, the protein that keeps it firm, smooth and supported. Collagen stimulators are injectable treatments that encourage your skin to produce more of its own collagen over time.

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which work mainly by adding volume, collagen stimulators work gradually. Results build over several months as new collagen forms, and they tend to look natural because they come from your own skin's response.

At your consultation, Libbie will assess your skin and recommend the option best suited to your goals.

Ellansé

Ellansé contains tiny, smooth microspheres of polycaprolactone (PCL), a material that has been used in medical products for many years, suspended in a soft gel. The gel gives an immediate lift and is gradually absorbed over a few weeks, while the microspheres stimulate your skin to build new collagen in its place.

Ellansé is used to restore volume and support in areas such as the cheeks, temples, jawline, chin and the lines from the nose to the mouth.

Course: Usually 1 treatment. If several areas are being treated, this can be spread over 2 to 3 sessions. Results typically last 18 to 24 months, depending on the product used.

Juvelook

Juvelook combines PDLLA (poly-D,L-lactic acid), a collagen stimulator, with hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid gives immediate hydration, while the PDLLA encourages new collagen over the following months. It's placed close to the surface of the skin, making it ideal for improving skin quality, fine lines, texture and scarring, including under the eyes and around the mouth.

Course: 3 treatments, 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Lenisna

Lenisna contains the same ingredients as Juvelook, but with a much higher concentration of PDLLA. It's placed deeper in the skin to provide more structural support, making it well suited to mature skin, loss of firmness and areas that need gentle lifting.

Course: 2 treatments, 6 to 8 weeks apart.

Juvelook and Lenisna can also be combined in one plan, with Juvelook for skin quality and Lenisna for deeper support.

What happens at your consultation

  1. 1

    Your medical history

Libbie goes through your health, medications and any previous treatments, to make sure any option you consider is safe for you.

  2. 2

    Your goals

You talk through what you'd like to change and how you want to look and feel.

  3. 3

    Your options

Libbie explains what's suitable for you, including expected results, risks, side effects and costs, and agrees a plan with you. Where treatment isn't the right choice, she'll tell you honestly, and suggest alternatives or refer you on where appropriate.

  4. 4

    Time to decide

A cooling-off period before any treatment gives you time to think, with no pressure to go ahead.

If you do go ahead, Libbie will give you written information about preparing for your appointment and caring for your skin afterwards, and you'll have a follow-up appointment to review your results.

Before your treatment

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
  • Avoid blood-thinning painkillers, such as ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen, for 24 hours, unless a doctor has prescribed them.
  • Arrive without makeup.
  • Avoid booking treatment within 2 weeks of an important event, to allow any swelling or bruising to settle.

Treatment

On the day of treatment:

  1. 1Review medical history and goals
  2. 2Answer any further questions
  3. 3Obtain written consent for the treatment
  4. 4Cleanse the skin
  5. 5Apply numbing cream if needed
  6. 6Injections, using a fine needle or blunt cannula

Aftercare

  • Avoid touching the treated area for 6 hours, unless Libbie has given you massage instructions.
  • Avoid makeup for 12 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol, vigorous exercise, saunas and steam rooms for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Avoid facials, facial massage and other treatments on the area for 2 weeks, unless Libbie has agreed them.
  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF every day.

Side effects

Side effects are usually mild and settle within 1 to 2 weeks:

  • Redness and swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising
  • Small bumps or firmness at the injection points

Rare but important to know about:

  • Lumps or nodules that don't settle, which can appear weeks or months later
  • Infection
  • An allergic reaction
  • A product blocking a blood vessel, which can damage the skin or, very rarely, affect vision

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, collagen stimulators can't be dissolved, so Libbie takes a careful, gradual approach.

If the skin turns pale or white (blanching), or you have severe or worsening pain, contact Libbie immediately on 07974 345 457.

If you notice any change in your vision, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E straight away, then let Libbie know.

Medical suitability

Treatment isn't suitable if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an active skin infection, cold sore or inflammation in the treatment area
  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients, including lidocaine
  • Have a history of keloid or raised scarring
  • Have permanent fillers in the treatment area

Please let Libbie know if you:

  • Take blood-thinning medicines
  • Have an autoimmune condition, or a history of multiple severe allergies
  • Have a history of cold sores
  • Have had fillers, threads or other injectables in the same area
  • Have had, or are planning, dental work or vaccinations within 2 weeks of treatment

Is this right for me?

  • You've noticed your skin losing firmness, structure or elasticity.
  • You'd like gradual, natural-looking results rather than an instant change.
  • You're looking for longer-lasting results from your own collagen.

Frequently asked questions

Which collagen stimulator is right for me?+

It depends on your skin and goals. Juvelook is often chosen for skin quality, texture and fine lines, Lenisna for deeper firmness and support, and Ellansé for restoring volume and structure. Libbie will recommend the best option at your consultation.

How are collagen stimulators different from dermal fillers?+

Hyaluronic acid fillers mainly add volume straight away. Collagen stimulators work more gradually, encouraging your skin to build its own collagen, so results develop over months and tend to last longer. They also can't be dissolved.

Does it hurt?+

Most people find it very manageable. Numbing cream can be used, and many products also contain a local anaesthetic.

Is there any downtime?+

Most people return to their usual activities straight away, though swelling, redness and bruising are common for a few days.

When will I see results?+

You may notice some immediate change from the gel or hyaluronic acid, which settles over the first few weeks. The main results build gradually over 2 to 6 months as new collagen forms.

How long do results last?+

It depends on the product, your skin and your lifestyle. Ellansé results typically last 18 to 24 months, Juvelook results last up to 12 months, and Lenisna results last up to 18 months. Libbie will explain what to expect for your plan.
